About Me
Hi, my name is Roger Thompson, and I am a certified Professional Tutor of English on Preply, where I have received five-star feedback and promotion to Super Tutor in January 2026. Prior to that, from 2006 to 2024 I was a professor of English at Kyung Hee University in South Korea as well. I am also a Harvard, Yale, and Cornell-certified scholar, and a trained broadcaster/native speaker with a neutral North American accent, and I would like to tell you about what I offer. To start, I suppose my greatest accomplishment was completing my MA thesis (Brown Shoes, Black Shoes, And Felt Slippers: Parochialism and the Evolution of the Post-War US Navy) and getting it published by the US Naval War College. It was widely considered a classic in military sociology, and it became required reading in a graduate-level class at MIT in 2005. And coming in a close second was winning a 24k gold medal for teaching at my Korean university in 2016 (see the photo below). My specialties are general English conversation for adults, essay editing, and international travel preparation. While you're here, please check out the reviews I received from former students below. I am now accepting new students, so please feel free to book a trial lesson by clicking the button below.

"There are only three words that come to my mind when I think about Professor Thompson: 'teaching and passion'. I had the opportunity to take his Global Citizen class. I enjoyed his lectures and the passion he had when we talked about how to make the world a better place. He made me rethink my contribution to this society, and now I want to be a better person every day..."

"Prof. Roger Thompson was one of the first colleagues I met when initially employed by Kyung Hee University's Graduate School of Education in 2008. His unbridled enthusiasm for the subject matter in his Civics lectures is inspiring, but he also endeavors to incorporate those principles into his daily life hence leading by example.
He is unflinchingly principled, passionate, compassionate, driven, and always open to new or different perceptions. "
- Prof. Sheridene Oersen

"Professor Thompson taught me most of the things I know about being ethical and he helped me exploit the logical part of me, which has enabled me to advance in my career. Professor Thompson is a very intelligent, understanding, and funny person. I can testify that he is very good at what he does."

"I took several classes with Professor Thompson during my time at Kyung Hee University. He demonstrated exceptional professionalism and kept his students engaged and excited to learn. Not only this, but Professor Thompson showed a level of dedication and passion to his teaching and students as well as a level of warmth and care that was unseen to me elsewhere during my time in South Korea."

"I had the privilege of meeting Professor Thompson during my final year at Kyunghee University in South Korea, where I took one of his classes. Although the course was outside of my major, it far exceeded my expectations. Thanks to Professor Thompson's ability to break down complex topics with clarity and his patience in answering all my questions, I not only thoroughly enjoyed the course but also learned a great deal."
